2017 Wrens Fall Fly-in

Mark your calendars!  Friday-Saturday September 15-16 2017.   As usual many of us will be there earlier in the week.  In fact we may just fly there from Cedartown!

Wrens

I plan to go this year to Wrens Fly-in with my Gyro. I plan to stay at the Airport in my trailer.

Would like to bring camp fire wood and have a nice camp fire to sit around. It also keeps bugs away. I'm going to ask John if this possible.

Anyone remember the good old days at Bensen Days when we had camp fires and a lot of bad singing?

Louis

Definitely on the fire stuff

Louis,

No need to call John on the fire stuff.  We did fires one or two years before and he loves it; especially if the attendees bring and/or cut the wood.  He cut it himself one year, but let us know the more self-serve on that the more he likes it.

That pretty much goes for all the things that need to be done around the airport to set-up and tear-down... setting up signs, ropes, tables, tents, etc. etc. etc.  He wants as much help as he can get.  So, hoping the folks who show up early and the ones that stay late are OK with getting their hands a little dirty (so to speak.) hint, hint.

John already has the bottom of a 50 gallon barrel as a firepit.

Bring it on down!  John will thank you for it!

Speaking of fires, since Gerald may not bring the screen/videos, etc, we may be looking for some other form of evening entertainment, like Jon playing the accordion or something like that.

Not just NO!

The combined wealth of all the members of the worldwide gyroplane community is not enough to cause me to play an accordion.  Actually, I'm doing the planet a public service.  It is said that the end of days is heralded by Gabriel and his horn.  That's close, but not exactly right.  It actually is about playing an accordion.  Just to be safe, NOBODY should play one.

OK...what POSSIBLE reason could you have for wanting me to play an instrument that requires the wearing of a skirt?

...and for the record, I'm fine with Kazoos.

Who is coming to wrens? Barry is wearing his 70s gym class uniform the whole weekend. I hear Jon C. is wearing a kilt and playing the kazoo. This should be a good one. Lets grow this event.

Ready to go

Last year at Wrens I was still balancing on the mains and was probably ready to solo, but, Jon Carleton and I both decided to wait unit we were back in Cedartown. I soloed the following Tuesday and now have over 70 hours including around 10 hours at Bensen Days. I look forward to this year's event and getting to fly the local fields!

I plan to arrive on Thursday.

The official WRENS CHALLENGE is ON!

Folks,

Please help to build this into a great event by posting the heck out of this Forum Thread:

https://www.rotaryforum.com/forum/general/events/1123056-wrens-challenge-2017-sep-15-17-ga-and-carolina-vs-the-world

I know... I know... in the last year or two, some of you seem to be adhering to some kind of aversion or 'boycott' for posting on the RWF.  I understand that.  I do.  But please, I, (as your humble club Secretary and Event Promoter) plead that you POST on that thread!  It DOES make a difference.

Or, if you are absolutely determined to fly under the radar right now, then please email or text me if you can make it to Wrens... and what you are bringing.

Oh, and please post the heck out of this (Peachstate) thread too!

Mark

Why?...

Why doesn't current event postings show up as latest activity on the Rotory Wing Forum??

That new forum sucks

NetPilot
NetPilot's picture
Partially excluded before... fully excluded now

In the old format, I noticed on the very front/main page that there was a short list of most popular threads, and even back then, Event threads never showed there.  (Must have been programmed to not show there either by vBulletin, or by the Administrators?)

BUT, back then, once you clicked on the link/tab for 'posts since last visit' the Events threads DID show up there.  And that, I think was the most popular resting spot on the old Forum for folks.

BUT the new format... seems to EXCLUDE Event threads in EVERY 'most recently updated' list.

It does make it a lot harder to see the activity!  I hope they can change it.

Jon Carleton
Jon Carleton's picture
Aliens!

I don't go to Rotary Wing Forum anymore.  I think it has bees.  Perhaps aliens.  Solar flares probably delete the latest activity.

Scott Essex
Scott Essex's picture
Forum

Yes that is SAD, the forum used to be really easy to use and worked for the most part fairly well, now it is like an old 1990's yahoo forum, really a step backwards, difficult to navigate, etc...really sad the new format has nearly killed the rotary wing forum..

NetPilot
NetPilot's picture
Agreed... BUT!

I agree with everything you guys are saying.  I, as well, have not become comfortable with the new RWF format.

BUT... even as RWF hobbles-along in this clunky state it is STILL getting a lot of activity overall.

As I write this, the "Challenge" thread has over 1000 hits.  Probably not as many as it would have after a week under the old format, but certainly nothing to scoff at.

At the moment, if we care to 'advertise' or 'market' any activities/events in a place that has the most traffic, like it or not, RWF is still 'it' for the gyro community.

I would like to see how far we can grow the Wrens event.  Just makes it more fun for me.  Kind of selfish, I know, but, without some kind of marketing effort, growth will be very slow, especially for those lurkers out there.

I do not know this for sure, but I believe that Middle Georgia College very likely learned about Wrens from the RWF thread.  Now there will likely be 4 helicopters there, and a load of students interested in rotorcraft.  It's all about planting seeds... right?

So, although I would like to see the gyro community urge RWF Administrators to address the myriad issues that have reduced usage on that site over the last years, I also hate to think that our members are discouraging its use, or even just personally boycotting it, simply to make a point... to our own detriment... marketing wise.

So, as usual, I encourage everyone to go out to the RWF Challenge thread and post the hell out of it!  :-)  Clunky as it is!

Well said Mark !

RWF

My primary concern is that the new format does not allow us to bump the thread in order to keep it up front for visitors when they go there. The event gets buried by new threads no matter how much we post on the thread.

NetPilot
NetPilot's picture
Thank you Tom

100% agreed Tom.

It drives me crazy that there is no way to 'push an Events thread to the top' anymore on RWF.

But somehow, amazingly, there are enough folks out there poking around to see it... Over hits 1000 worth now.

Thank you also for your side-post on RWF about this topic.  I am hoping that Todd or one of the other Admins will see it and reconsider if that is something that can/should be adjusted in the new version.  Makes no sense to me that Events don't get the same focus as other categories.

Nonetheless, thank you for all the posts you have made on the Challenge thread already.   Hoping others will join in on the fun.  hint hint. :-)

With light traffic it's a little over 2 hours from Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson Airport. Up to 3 hours with heavy traffic.

WRENS 2017

Well from everything I am seeing Wrens 2017 is going to be a premier gyro event the likes many have waited for throughout the south and southeastern parts of America!

Whoo Hoo!! Can't wait myself since Bensen Days during the Gabor years was the last gyro shin digg I could attend.

And this time I even have a gyro to bring....won't get to fly it but soon enough.

Be arriving Thurs.  C Ya All there. As john Roundtree is often heard saying....

"It's A Party!!!  BRING ALL YER FRIENDS!"

NetPilot

Darren,

Glad you are still planning to be there... AND with the gyro everyone has been wanting to see in person all these months!

Schedule

Is there going to be any organized events or pot-luck dinner Friday or Saturday?  Mama Gyro wants to come, so we need to know if there is anything else for her to do besides watching us all fly around in circles?  Mama Gyro needs to know if she needs to brush up on her Spam recipes?

Jon Carleton
Jon Carleton's picture
Not Usually

She can watch the dove hunters get mad at gyroplanes flying over their dove fields, but there are not any organized events.  Sometimes they have a hot dog wagon with hamburger-like objects, but I'd opt for driving to town.

garyweaver

Spam, Spam, Spam, Spam

The only Spam recipe I know is fried spam and scrambled eggs. Maybe I need to aquire some of Mary's culinary expertise.

The EAA chapter has a nice BBQ lunch on Saturday for donations. We usually invade the Amish restaurant one evening and the local Mexican restaurant another evening. Then there is the liar's competition, not sure Mary is qualified for that !

Me and Jake-inator on Thursday

I and the Jake Gyro are sharing the ride with Tom and his Air Command.  We plan to be there hopefully by lunch-time-ish on Thursday.

It'd be cool if we could fit Lewis G's "Edge" gyro in the trailer too and Lewis could be there with it!  Wrens dreams?  We'll see...

I am not happy this storm is on it's way.....damn you mother nature!!

Irma

It appears that Irma will hit this weekend. It should be gone by start of Wrens on the 14th or 15th. It could impact folks getting to Wrens from Florida and or the Carolinas, depending on the path and impact of the of the storm and speed it departs to the North and East.

Wolverine
Wolverine's picture
yeah ..just my

luck!

I do live in Florida. Have to keep watching and see what happens...this is my B-day present to myself......

Besides certain ppl dogging my gyro build I want to show it to a more discerning crowd with positive input instead of snide comments

and mis-direction on build techniques. But that is another matter. I'll be there if it's at all possible.
